I agree with your second part that this is a bit extreme. Note that for some 
(shy) people this may be the point where they wouldn't send a message at 
all...

Maybe one could receive a message at signup with link to FAQ and a note that 
all messages are being archived.

Yes, the most problematic are those, who don't care about the community. IMHO, 
the only way to handle this kind of people is to have moderated list (at 
least for begginners), but again with moderation there are lot of other 
problems we already discussed.
