You cannot answer that question without knowing what you want to do and how
you want to accomplish it. When using a Programable Logic Device you can
place one or many OpenRISC CPUs into the chip or, and this is the important
part, or you can devise a solution engine that looks nothing like what can
be done with a Pentium IV 2.2 GHz CPU or bunch of OpenRISC CPUs. For an

Basically, it's about a Cambridge University
group who have cracked DES (as used in banking)
with an off the shelf Altera board (Excalibur)
and two days processing time.

The article includes a good explanation of DES
technology.  Source code is also included for
the curious.  (May be of interest to those
handling the DES project?)

To solve this problem using a Pentium IV 2.2 GHz could take 100's of years
but by crafting a solution engine they could reach the solution overnight.
