XMCD CD DATABASE ================ This update: 7 November 1997 CD database entries: 125,241 Disk usage: 150MB approx. (on filesystem with 1KB logical blocks) REMOTE CD DATABASE SERVERS -------------------------- You do not need to install this package on your system if your system is on the Internet via a dedicated or dialup connection. Xmcd/cda 2.x and later, and other CD player clients that are Internet-CDDB-enabled can query for CD database data from remote CD database servers on the Internet. You can save a significant amount of filesystem space and inode consumption on your system by using the Internet CD database servers. Moreover, updates to the CD database on the servers are immediately accessible to you. There are several public CD database servers in operation around the world. To get the most current list of servers please check the CD database server web page: http://www.cddb.com/ Consult your client application's documentation about how to configure it to use the Internet CD database. The CD database archive has grown to become quite large. If your connection to the FTP server is slow, please do not download it, as it will take a long time and consume network bandwidth. INSTALL Instructions -------------------- There are two forms of the CD database archives. The "Standard" form and the "alternate" form. The standard form is used by xmcd/cda and the cddbd server. The alternate form is used by some Windows 95/NT client applications. Please refer to the application's documentation about which is the appropriate archive to use. Standard form: xmcd-cddb.tar.gz Installing this archive will consume a large amount of inodes in your filesystem! The number of inodes used will be the same as the number of CD database entries contained in this archive. To install, save this file as /tmp/xmcd-cddb.tar.gz. Then, execute the following commands: cd /usr/lib/X11/xmcd/cddb gunzip < /tmp/xmcd-cddb.tar.gz | tar xvf - Substitute the "/usr/lib/X11/xmcd" with your actual Xmcd library directory. You may remove the /tmp/xmcd-cddb.tar.gz file after installation. Alternate form: xmcd-cddb.zip To install, save this file in the appropriate directory on your hard disk and then use the PKUNZIP (or other compatible) utility to unpack. ABOUT The CDDB files -------------------- The xmcd database files are organized into subdirectories, each is a separate category. Some of the files may be incorrectly categorized in this distribution, and I welcome suggestions. You may have a CD that has an entry in this CD database but yet your app would not automatically recognize it upon loading. This is likely to be caused by differences in track timings between the pressing you have and the one that the CDDB entry was created with. In xmcd, you use the "LINK" feature to create multiple CDDB entries which are links to the same CDDB file. If you load a disc that xmcd does not recognize, try bringing up the CDDB window and press the LINK button. A menu will appear asking you to select the category. Then xmcd will try to create a list of CDDB entries in the specified category with the same number of tracks as the currently inserted disc. You choose the appropriate entry and xmcd will create a link for you. The next time you load this disc, xmcd will automatically recognize it and load the proper CDDB file. If the LINK feature does not yield an entry that matches your CD, then the database does not have an entry for it and you must enter the all the information and save it into the CDDB yourself. I hope you will find the database files useful. You are welcome to contribute to this CD database by using the "Send" feature found on xmcd version 1.2 and later. Other CDDB-enabled client applications also have similar features. Before submitting CD information to the central archive, please read the "style guide" on the CDDB server web page to make sure your submission conforms to the guidelines: http://www.cddb.com/ If you discover that certain CDs are placed in the wrong category, please e-mail a correction request to xmcd@amb.org. This CD database is updated periodically with new entries.
