I wouldn't mind this except I am so new to the project that I don't think I
would be very helpful.

How about weekly status meetings online, something that can help bring
everyone somewhat up to date on what is happening with the other projects.
Maybe on IRC?  or a specific mailing list for status updates?

If more people are aware of who the other active players are, what they are
working on, what they need, what the hold-ups are, etc, more people would be
qualified to help newer players.

I couldn't agree more. But AFAIK nobody is interested to do this.
