Microsoft PDC Journal
Microsoft Posted by emmett on Sunday July 16, @01:32AM
from the remember-the-alamo dept.
OzzyFudd writes "I have recently returned from the Microsoft Professional Developers conference and posted a scathing journal of my week there at www.ozzyfudd.com I am an architech who works in largely heterogenous environments, hence, I go because I have to. I offer here some commentary, criticism, and humor from behind enemy lines." Gives some interesting insight into the future of C#, as well.

MAPS RBL Challenged In Court Case
Spam Posted by michael on Saturday July 15, @06:15PM
from the when-spammers-attack dept.
An Anonymous Coward sent in "Direct Magazine is carrying the story Yesmail Gets Restraining Order Against MAPS Blacklist (curiously dated July 17). YesMail has apparently obtained a restraining order preventing MAPS from entering it into its Real-time Black-hole List."

XFree86 4.0.1 Review
X Posted by CmdrTaco on Saturday July 15, @02:34PM
from the stuff-to-read dept.
Fawking DSL writes: "BSD Today reviews the new features, supported cards, and installation of XFree86 version 4.0.1." The article starts off by saying that XF864.0 "Shocked The World" which I find mind numbingly amusing, but it's a good review.

Features: Interview With Mike Sklut
Censorship Posted by jamie on Saturday July 15, @01:45PM
from the kids-these-days dept.
"AOL wants your children to be safe online," using their Parental Controls. There's just one problem with their censorware. You can see any site you want by appending a "." to the hostname - and this has been true since at least 1997, when Mike Sklut of newriot.com discovered the simple exploit. At the time, he was 11 years old. Despite his having told a few thousand of his closest friends, AOL didn't wise up to the fact until yesterday morning. Mike's out of town at a baseball tournament, but we managed to trade e-mail with him about his early hacking years.

Mouse That Scans Your Fingerprints
Hardware Posted by CmdrTaco on Saturday July 15, @01:30PM
from the never-forget-a-password-again dept.
Pac writes: "The U-Match mouse has an embedded fingerprint scanning device. It is currently available only for Windows 9x/NT, but Biolink says it will have a Unix\Linux version by the end of the year and a Mac version in the beginning of 2001." I've been eyeballing finger scanners since I saw a nifty one that worked through PAM at a tradeshow one time: I still think it'd be very convenient if it worked, but I'm very skeptical that something like this could gain widespread acceptance.

ACLU Files For Carnivore Info
United States Posted by emmett on Saturday July 15, @12:28PM
from the trust-me dept.
Robert J. Berger writes: "A press release from the ACLU says they are using the Freedom of Information Act to seek all of the codes, records, letters and memorandums related to the FBI programs dubbed 'Carnivore', 'Omnivore' and 'Etherpeek.' "The FBI is saying 'trust us, we're not violating anybody's privacy,"' said Barry Steinhardt, associate director of the ACLU. "With all due respect, we'd like to determine that for ourselves.""

Galeon Web Browser: The Best Of Mozilla?
Mozilla Posted by CmdrTaco on Saturday July 15, @10:46AM
from the stripping-down-the-lizard dept.
Motor writes: "The very excellent weekly newsletter NTK (Need To Know) tipped me off about galeon - a desperately needed attempt to build a mere browser (as opposed to an entire operating system/xterm/game console) using the best bit of the Mozilla project: gecko." I wondered how long before someone did this. Very excellent looking.

Tenchi Muyou 3?
Television Posted by emmett on Saturday July 15, @07:16AM
from the masaki-san dept.
randomErr write: "AIC, the people who did the good Tenchi episodes, has announced here that they are doing another series. They haven't said if it would be a based on the OVA series or a continuation of Tenchi in Tokyo. BTW, if you can't read Japanese, Click Here for a bad translation by Anime News Network." You guys know about Tenchi, right? It's about the high school kid that meets up with a demon, and the creepy 700-year-old mummy morphs into a girl space pirate? I love anime.

Ask Slashdot: Linux Implementation For 2500 Workstations?
Linux Posted by Cliff on Saturday July 15, @07:10AM
from the helpful-recommendations-wanted dept.
Jeff Kwiatkowski asks: "We are looking to roll out Linux to over 2500 desktops and could use any advice that we can get. We need security info, implementation suggestions and any other advice that you would care to offer. We are currently evaluating Debian, Caldera and Red Hat. I also want a minimalist desktop, so I have been leaning toward WindowMaker as the window manager. In addition, we currently have machines with 32 meg of RAM (fast processors, though) and would like to keep the upgrade to 64 meg, only, if possible. Lastly, do any of you have any thoughts on Word Perfect vs. Applixware?" For those of you who think that the claim 'Linux is not ready for the desktop' is a falsehood, then this story is for you. As you can see, people are looking at deploying Linux on the desktop, and suggestions from you guys could make this process a lot easier.

Survivor Winner Revealed By Bad Web Site Coding?
Television Posted by Roblimo on Saturday July 15, @06:41AM
from the slow-Saturday-mornings dept.
We got a number of submissions about this. The Tribal Council Voting History page for the CBS TV show Survivor apparently contains a bug that lets you see which contestants have been kicked off the show before their names appear on the site, sort of like the Slashdot bug (now fixed) that sometimes let you see our stories before they appeared on the main page. The clearest instructions I saw for exploiting the "Survivor Spoiler" bug were here. I'm sure CBS will fix this soon, but you could still pull the trick as of 6:40 a.m. (US EDT) this morning. Do you think this is a true bug, or is CBS doing it on purpose (with the "wrong people" crossed out) to increase interest in the show?

    Book Reviews

For some really good fiction check out John X. Sundman's Acts of the Apostles. Nanotechnology, evil corporations, encryption and conspiracy, oh my!

And if you are looking to brush up on your programming style check out The Pragmatic Programmer, written by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas.

Manning Publications has a great Perl book entitled Elements of Programming with Perl, written by Andrew L. Johnson

If you need to use Java 2 to work, than you should probably read Inside Java 2 Platform Security, Architecture, API Design and Implementation, written by Li Gong.
