Kleio 8 for Windows '95 / NT
Please note that at this moment there exists no organised support structure for the kleio software. For the time being it is in principle developed by a group of allied research institutions, for the purposes of these research institutions. It is freely available for other users, provided strictly "as is", however, without any implicit or explicit warranty, promise of support or the like.
The installation of kleio consists of two parts: (a) The actual installation of the software and (b) providing an environment under Windows '95 in which the system can run. For the time being kleio continues to be based on the X Windows system; this means all graphical components of kleio need an "X Emulator" to function under Windos '95.
- Basic installation
- Download from the WWW site where you found this file either the file v???e.zip (English messages) or v???g.zip (German messages).
- Unzip it into a directory. The following notes assume, that this is a directory called \kleio. This will also be assumed by later notes which may appear on the server. Please note, therefore, if you install it anywhere else.
- As a result you will receive a directory containing a file "startup.bat" and a subdirectory "V???". Please modify the startup.bat file only, if you are sure you know what you are doing.
- You will have to activate kleio from the command line within an MS-DOS window. If you use other such windows with settings specific for other software, create a new one for use by kleio.
- Let the DOS Window of your choice appear and clikc on the upper left corner, unto the multi-colored MS-DOS symbol.
- Activate the menu item "properties" you see there.
- Select PROPERTIES. The Program tab in itsfourth line contains a BATCH FILE field where you have to specify the name of a batch file, which from now on will be run whenever a window is opened. Write there "C:\KLEIO\startup.bat" (without the quotation marks, replacing "C" with the appropriate drive letter if necessary).
- Click the OK button.
- Close the DOS Window.
- Next time to activate that DOS Window, you can activate kleio by typing
- "kleio" on a command line without any further argument to get into the interactive system or
- "kleio <command-file> <result-file>" to activate the batch-oriented system.
- Installing an X Emulator
Many computing centres provide X-Emulators do make local PCs usable as graphics terminals for UNIX workstations. If this is the case at your site, consult your computing centre about how to use that X Emulator for applications running locally on your harddisk.
If you have no access to such an emulator:
- In the distribution directory you find a demo version of the X-Win32 Emulator of Starnet Communications. (File: x-win40.exe) This demo version can also be downloaded from http://www.starnet.com/. More recent versions of that X Emulator have, however, been known to create problems with kleio. The version contained in the kleio distribution directory has been tested to work with kleio.
- Download the emulator from one of the sources quoted above and install it. (I.e.: execute the file and follow instructions.)
- Running kleio interactively under the emulator
In all cases you will have to activate the X-Emulator explicitly via the Windows Start menu, before activating kleio from the MS-DOS Window. (The emulator stays resident, however, when you stop a specific invocation of kleio.) Some X-Emulators require, that you explicitly raise the emulator to the top of the desk top, before you can work in it.
- Note
The provision of the demo version of the X-Win32 emulator does not in any way constitute a recommendation to buy that product. Of all tested X Emulators, it has provided the best performance, however and it seems to be very reasonably priced.
