L. van Beethoven Op 59 No. 2 - Movement 2 Notes/Comments Changes are relative to the Breitkopf & Haertelin (B&H) score grk 6 Feb 2003 Note: I came across a term in this score that I did not recogize and is not in my references. I looked up the term and include the definition here: Mancando - a directive to perform a certain passage of a composition with decreasing volume, or for the volume to grow quieter, and die away. (www.music.vt.edu/musicdictionary/textm/Mancando.html) Bar 4 - V2 - Should beat 4 be a rest ? (Same question as bar 55) Bar 10 - V1 - Last two 1/16th notes should be staccato to be consistent. Bar 29 - Va - Should the third and fourth 1/4 notes be ties ? Left un-tied. Bar 32 - Vc - Should the third and fourth 1/4 notes be ties ? Left un-tied. Bar 33 - Bar 48 - V1 - B&H Score indicates that first 3 beats are slurred and last 2 beats are slurred (slurs cross over). Changed to first 2 beats slurred and last 2 beats slurred - this is consistent with later usage. Bar 55 - Va - Should beat 4 be a rest ? (Same question as bar 4) Bar 56 - V2 - The 1/2 notes should be slurred to be consistent with with Va and Vc Bar 56/57 - Va - the last 1/2 note in bar 56 should be slurred into bar 57 to be consistent. Bar 62 - V1 - B&H slurring does not look right. First group of three 1/8 notes slurred - second group, second 1/8 note slurred into next bar - Changed to second group of 1/8 notes slurred (and not into next bar) - same as V2 Bar 64,65,67 - V1 - Last triplet 1/8 note should be staccato Bar 63-66 - Va - Note: The first two notes of the last triplet set in these bars are not tied or slurred. This is not consistent with other parts throughout this section. Bar 68 - V1 - last 1/8 note in first triplet group should be staccato Bar 70 - V2,Vc - Pattern assumed to be triplet 1/8 notes, 1/8 note,1/8 rest - repeat pattern Bar 72 - Vc - Pattern assumed to be triplet 1/8 notes, 1/8 note ,1/8 rest - repeat pattern Bar 73 - Vc - Pattern assumed to be triplet 1/8ths (rest, 1/8 note, 1/8 note), 1/8 note,1/8 rest - repeat pattern Bar 79,80 - Va - First 1/4th Note should be staccato Bar 84 - Vc - All notes in bar should be staccato Bar 85 to 91 - Vc - B&H shows note pattern as 1/8 note tied to 1/16, 16 note - Earlier it was dotted 1/8 note and 1/16 note. To be consistent with the usage in earlier measures, the dotted 1/8 note - 1/16 note pattern will be used. Bar 86 - Vc - B&H shows last two note groups slurred - This is not consistent useage - No slur will be used. Bar 108 - Va - Last two 1/4 notes - should these be tied to be consistent with Vc ? No changes made (e.g. left separate) Bar 112 - Vc - The notes in this bar should be staccato to be consistent. Bar 113 - Va,Vc - Mancando directive is shown for V1,V2,Va. Vc pattern is similar V1&V2, so it would seem that Vc should get the mancando directive, not Va. This would be consistent w/usage in bars 33-34. Bar 134 - Vc - All notes should be be staccato Bar 145-146 - V2,Va - Should the triplets be staccato ? (No change made) Bar 147 - V2 - Slur is shown as starting in bar 146 - The slur should start in bar 147 Bar 148 - Va - The first two notes are shown as C natural and C sharp and are tied. This pattern is not consistent with the other note/pitch useage, nor is it consistent with the C Natural in V2 - Change both to C Natural. Bar 157 - Vc - This staff should also show the "hairpin" (cresc then decresc) markings (like V1,V2 and Va).
