This is the 'freeze' executable for Linux. It works just like compress, is much slower and also a lot better. I have been using it exclusively for a few month now, with no problems. Compression is usually 20-30% better than compress. Frozen files have the extension '.F'. The binary is linked dynamically and requires /lib/libc.2.2.2. It was compiled with '-O2 -fomit-frame-pointer' and stripped. Make links to unfreeze, melt and fcat (melt==unfreeze). If you are interested, get the full distribution & man page.
